Learn about the history of opera from 16th-century Italy to present day, through presentations by experts on the art form. Full of fun and practical ways to get to know and embrace, Opera 101 will provide teachers with materials and strategies including tools for critical listening, examining the libretto, adapting source material and more. At the end of each session, LA Opera teaching artists will lead participants in a hands-on workshop that teachers can then take to the classroom.
LA Opera’s award-winning series that explores opera from an interdisciplinary point of view. Gain insight about the historical context in which it was created and discuss its role as history and art, as well as language and social commentary. Learn all about the stars and artists of the opera world, as well as its production and business. Enjoy recitals and rehearsals, and receive special news updates. Up to two LAUSD salary points are offered for participating teachers.
Based on the California Common Core Curriculum, these professional development sessions help teachers to integrate the common themes of many operas with the historical and cultural context in which they were written. Arts integration specialists work with teachers to create engaging lessons to be used in their classrooms. Each sessions ends with a demonstration performance from a professional opera singer. One salary point is available for this program.
