Samuels Family Latino and African American High School Internship Program (LA-HIP)

LA-HIP is a summer research training and college preparatory program for Latino and African-American rising senior high school students from public schools in Los Angeles County. The overall goal is to provide students that have a genuine interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) with the opportunity to learn hands-on laboratory-based research and to promote their careers to become future scientists or physician scientists. Interns conduct their own research projects and also receive professional college and financial aid counseling to help them with the college application process.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled junior at a public high school
  • Resident of Los Angeles County
  • Genuine interest in STEM as evidenced by courses taken and extracurricular activities
  • Academically outstanding student
  • Committed to your education and rigorous learning

APPLY: The online application will be available beginning in October 2015. An unofficial transcript and recommendation from your science teacher or academic counselor is also required.

The Intern Project

The Intern Project (TIP) engages high-profile businesses to provide mentorship, professional development, and paid summer internships for LAUSD students. TIP interns work in one of the following areas: (1) Arts, Media, & Entertainment, (2) Energy, Environment, & Utilities, (3) Health Science & Medical Technology; and (4) Government, Philanthropy, & Social Impact. Interns also have the opportunity to participate in job training, bond with other interns through group activities and blog about their experiences.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • LAUSD students 16 years of age and older (preference given to current high school juniors)
  • Interest in one of the internship program areas
  • Ideal candidates have a record of high academic achievement (GPA of 3.0 or better), consistent attendance and knowledge of social media

APPLY: Applications can be submitted online at the TIP Hub. Application includes personal information, resume, leadership experience, extracurricular activities, work/volunteer experience, essay questions and 2-minute video.
