SMARTS is a six-week summer college prep program sponsored by UCLA’s Center for Excellence in Engineering and Diversity, designed to engage traditionally underrepresented students in rigorous science, technology, engineering and math instruction and training. SMARTS participants take classes in math, SAT preparation, research, and college and career planning. Some students also participate in the Research Apprentice Program, where they conduct research projects in UCLA labs with graduate students.
- Currently enrolled in 10th or 11th grade
- Completing any of the following math classes by June 2016: Trigonometry or Math Analysis or Pre-Calculus, if taking Calculus (current 9th grade students who have completed one or more of these classes are also eligible to apply)
- Students who attend schools within LAUSD or Inglewood Unified School District, and/or MESA participants receive priority consideration
- Ability to commute daily to UCLA campus
APPLY: The 2016 SMARTS application will be available to download on the program website in February. Application includes essay, transcript and two teacher recommendations.
