California African American Museum Young Docent Program

CAAM’s Young Docent Program exposes students to the responsibilities of work and the world of professional museum opportunities. The program begins with an intensive, two-week summer training, in which students gain specialized knowledge of museum exhibitions and programs and also learn to greet the public, research and develop tour scripts, conduct guided tours, invent activities to supplement their tours, conduct art workshops and give dramatic readings. After initial training, successful students are employed at CAAM for five weeks during which time, they will create a two-dimensional work of art and have it displayed at the museum!

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Enrolled in high school
  • Ages 15 1/2-18

APPLY: Applications for next year’s program will be available on the museum website in the spring of 2016. Application includes personal statement and letter of recommendation. An in-person interview is also required.
