As we approach 25 years since our founding, we recognize that the education landscape in South LA has changed quite a lot and the ways in which educators access community resources is much different. With that in mind, we are in the process of redeveloping some of our programs to better serve your needs. In order to take the time to thoughtfully strategize these changes, we have had to cut back on some of our regular programs. We only did one essay contest this school year instead of two, and the annual Teacher Awards are on hiatus for 2015. We plan to bring back a revamped Teacher Awards in 2016 and hope to have more information on that for you by this fall.
If you have any concerns or suggestions, please feel free to reach out to us. We hope to incorporate as much teacher feedback as possible into our updated programs.
The Music Center
The Blue Ribbon Children’s Festival will take place at The Music Center April 7-9, 2015. Designed for 5th grade students, this admission-free program is RSVP only on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students will see a live professional performance, then perform their own short, choreographed dance based on the performance. RSVP for your class now!
PBS Learning Media
PBS online offers a host of standards-based videos across subject areas and grades. Many videos will also provide links to discussion questions and links to supporting materials. Choose a standard, find a video, and incorporate digital learning into your classroom!
Santa Monica Pier Acquarium
The hands-on, interactive learning opportunities at the acquarium are tailored to the age and interests of your students. Focusing on conservation and pollution prevention, this field trip can expand the perspective of your students on the impact that human actions have on the environment and ocean life in particular. Details on field trip education topics by grade can be found here. There is a $150 fee for up to 65 students, plus teachers and chaperones. Limited scholarships are available.
